This video (and the larger piece it draws on) gets at one of the core ideas in I Want A Better Catastrophe: how optimism and pessimism are not what they might seem – less a good/evil binary and more two sides of the same coin—an idea that's perhaps needed more now than ever.
Nice work sir. I was having a conversation adjacent to this with Theresa in the Spring (Optimism vs. Hope) and I made a lot of the same points you did here... Glad that I'm not alone in choosing optimism.
Love, love, love this Andrew, such a good way forward in this liminal uncertain time. I need the optimism despite all the reasons not to have it! Thank you for framing it in such a way I can own it.
I just borrowed your book from the library and look forward to the read. I admire so many of the people you spoke with and will learn about the rest. I heard about the book from a great post by Jillian and Lil Bean.
I love this! "Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will"... it says it all - the need to be realistic AND idealistic at the same time. What a timely reminder :)
Thanks for that Andrew! I found myself laughing at the cap changes, especially when you had to rush it to keep up with your dialogue. How about adding a smiling “steaming pile of shit” logo to the caps? Oh wait…is that emoji trademarked? LOL
Really nice way to visualize your points. Thank you for this!

Fun and insightful, thank you! x
