When I write about the climate crisis or our broken politics or my own existential angst, I’m not just cathartically off-gassing into the void (okay, that is part of it), I’m also trying to connect with folks who are hurting in the same ways I am. I’m heartbroken at what we’re doing to our planet and our people; frustrated at the wounds the Left inflicts upon itself; grief-struck by what it takes to be a whole human. My balm is paradox and dark humor. I’m writing to “make things as simple as possible, but no simpler.” I’m trying, in the words of Milan Kundera,“to unite the utmost seriousness of question with the utmost lightness of form.”

You may have used Beautiful Trouble to plan a street action; or reached for Daily Afflictions to get you through your Saturn’s Return or a death in the family; or grieved your way through climate awakening with I Want a Better Catastrophe… If so, you may have wondered along with therapist-comedian Bernie Seigel, “who is Andrew Boyd, and where is he being treated?” Well, this substack is your chance to find out.

Here, I’ll be delving under my own hood, posting irregular rants/musings/beefs on topics ranging from postmodernism to Israel-Palestine to why I jump in the freezing ocean every Jan 1, as well as sharing idea-sized excerpts and cutting room floor gems that never made it into the books. Thanks for tuning in. Keen to connect.
